April 26, 2008 Hasbro Deluxe Indiana Jones action figuresThe first toys I am going to review are the 2008 Hasbro Deluxe Indiana Jones figures. As it is my first review the format of the review is a work in progress. I found these about a week before the shelf date of May 1, 2008 at a Seattle area Fred Meyer. It is not uncommon for this chain to break street dates on toys. They were $9.99 each there and I would assume most stores will be about the same price give or take a dollar or two. The first figure is Indiana Jones with horse. This Indy is the most articulate of all three of the deluxe Indys. It looks good but I couldn't quite get him seated right. He looks a bit stiff. On his own this Indy is also a bit spread eagle looking but considering he was meant to be horseback, it is exactly what I expect it to be. The horse is very nice - much better than the vintage Kenner horse. Lots of articulation points on it so you will have fun posing it. One of the stirrups on mine was a little misshaped. I don't know if this was intentional or not but it made getting Indy's boot into it a little difficult.
Next is the Indiana Jones with Temple Pitfall playset. It is a pretty average small playset with a swing out branch to swing on. The branch has a small stud for his whip to hook onto for the swing along with a button so the whip will be released sending Indy to his doom. This set comes with an Indy armed with his trademark whip and pistol as well as several snakes. The snakes don't make a lot of sense for the scene it is supposed to portray - especially since half of them are cobras. I am sure they will come in handy in another Indy display or playset. The Indy is average without a lot of articulation.
Next is the Indiana Jones with Temple Trap playset. Once again the playset and figure aren't that exciting on their own. Indy comes once again with his pistol and whip along with a bag of sand. I like the idea of the bag of sand but it proves at least in my case very difficult for Indy to hold. The trap is a spring loaded affair once the idol is removed. I have had some problems keeping it flat in the ready position. One side wants to spring up on its own.
The nice thing is both the Temple playsets fit together to form one larger playset.
Here is a shot of all three Deluxe Indiana Jones figures side by side for comparison. First is the horse riding Indy, next is the Temple Trap Indy and finally the Temple Pit Indy. All of these figures suffer from a bit of a bulgy eye look - mostly due to poor eye paint application.
Finally is the German Soldier with Motorcycle which is easily my favorite. It is a well detailed motorcycle with a well articulated soldier. The soldier has a working pistol holster and removable helmet. No action features on the bike but there is an odd tab on the bottom of the motorcycle that I can't quite figure out what to do with. I assume as more toys come out, it might make sense. I am going to be very tempted to get one or two more of these. This is a really fun toy.
Overall I am happy with these figures but I might just be suffering from a bit of toy geek glee after finally getting a quality 3 3/4" Indy line after a very long wait. The Kenner line is one of my favorites and these will be fun for me to collect. I am sure there are going to be a hundred different Indy figures that will come out this year so you might not need all of these. You can probably be a bit more picky than I am. The German soldier is a must buy though. It is a good villain and could be used in a variety of toy lines. Overall scores for me are Indy/horse *** (out of 5 stars) Indy with pit playset ** 1/2 Indy with idol trap ** 1/2 German soldier with motorcycle ****
