05/04/2008 Hasbro The Incredible Hulk movie steel beam Hulk Review
Next up is a figure from the new Hasbro Incredible Hulk movie line - the steel beam Hulk. At first glance I worry that this toy line will not do well at all. It has the curse of what most people consider a bad movie a couple years ago - people are just assuming this one will be as well. It also frustrates Marvel Legends collectors because they want all their figures the same scale and these are definitely not to scale. This movie also features a new design for the Abomination which also has fans worked up. I however was pretty excited for this toy line for one main reason - it is in 1:18 scale so I can have a Hulk toy to crush my GI Joes and Cobras! He does this very well. And as a matter of fact this toy line reuses the Hasbro Direct to Consumer era of GI Joe figures for its human figures. I haven't found any of those yet so this review is strictly for the Hulk. The Hulkbuster Humvee is also a resused GI Joe vehicle but I haven't picked that up yet either. The packaging is average - surprise surprise it is overall green. A standard bubble and card. It looks good overall but nothing to be too excited about. This figure is about 6 inches tall so he will tower over 3 3/4" Joes like he should. I went with the steel beam Hulk because the other two I have seen have action features. Those two have more menacing faces but I would rather have a Hulk that can be posed over a slapping movement. I wouldn't go as far as calling this Hulk super-poseable but it does the trick for most poses. He comes with a steel beam for him to hold - of course - why else call him steel beam Hulk? The beam can break in half for further chaos. His left hand does grip other action figures well as you will see later in the review.
Previous to this Hulk I was using a Toy Biz Marvel Legends Showdown Hulk for my 3 3/4" needs. That figure was always lacking in part because of its small size and also because the ball joints always popping off. Here you can see how the Marvel Legends Showdown Hulk clearly doesn't measure up to this new movie Hulk.
If you want to use this movie Hulk with the other Marvel Legends Showdown figure, you should have no trouble. He towers over them as he should and looks eager to smash them into oblivion. World War Hulk indeed!
But as I said, I bought this Hulk to unleash him on the Cobra hordes. Hulk smash puny Cobra!
I think this Hulk cost me around $10 and is readily available where ever you buy your action figures. If you want a Marvel Legends scale figure, wait for the Marvel Legends Hulk line coming out later this summer. If you want a Hulk to fit into your 3 3/4" world, I think this is the one for you. I am giving this a *** 1/2 out of five star rating. The packaging is a bit boring but the figure packs a well placed punch to my 3 3/4" collecting world. It is also not that expensive so it shouldn't break your wallet and is easily available.
