07/10/2008 Gentle Giant Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi in Clone Trooper Armor Mini Bust Review

Today after a bit of a break it is a Gentle Giant Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi in Clone Trooper Armor Mini Bust Review. I love Gentle Giant's Star Wars bust line. I am not a completist but pretty darn close. I have a lot of these busts. I'll try not to be biased but I can already tell you that I love this thing.

This was sort of made as a companion piece to their Obi-Wan Kenobi in Clone Trooper Armor statue. The two compliment each other well. GG even sold the two as a package deal on their web site at one point. While I admired the statue, I passed on it in the end due to lack of space for it.

Gentle Giant is using the standard high end Star Wars collectible packaging design that is being used by multiple companies. It is a nice clean box and easy to display. I was a fan of this design but now that it has been used for a couple of years (?), I am growing a bit tired of it. I am ready for something new. You will get multiple views of the bust on the two sides and some biographical information on Obi-Wan on the back. It also has a tiny window view on the front.

Once you get it out of the box and accompanying styrofoam shell, you will have very little assembly ahead of you. This is a two piece bust - the main body part and the right hand with his lightsaber. This one uses a basic plug in assembly for the wrist. I was kind of hoping for a magnet attachment point like the Tusken Raider uses - basically because I am four years old and like to play with magnets. The sculpt is very nice. It is nice to see it is a whole new sculpt as well. I would have been bummed if it had been a total rehash of a previous Clone Trooper to get out a bust cheaply. There is no question this is Obi-Wan Kenobi. Is it a perfect Ewan McGregor? I don't know but it is a darn nice Obi-Wan and I think he looks like he means business.

I wish I couldn't see the post in the lightsaber blade where the blade attaches to the hilt. This is a very minor complaint but my eyes seem to be drawn to it whenever I look at this bust. I guess while I am dreaming I would love to see GG make a deluxe bust like this and have the lightsaber blade light up. You don't have to do that on every bust but it would be a cool bonus on a couple. This would have been a good one to do it on too.

It is painted quite well with nice solid colors. I didn't notice any paint flaws on mine. I am happy with the skin tone on this bust in particular as it is much more natural than you can get on some items like this.

This bust stands very well. The cape comes down the back and helps steady the whole piece. I won't have to worry about this one tipping over.

It is limited to 5000 total pieces made so you shouldn't have too much of an issue finding one. I would guess it will be relatively easy to find for a while and you may be able to score one for a deal on eBay.

This will run you around $55 give or take a bit if you choose to buy it at retain like I did. This out in stores now. I got mine at a local comic shop. You might be able to get one at yours or maybe find a better deal at a online store. Either way if you collect GG Star Wars line of busts, this one is worth your time and money getting.

I am giving this a **** out of five star rating.

I don't think it is perfect but it is pretty darn nice. It is a welcome addition to my collection.
