05/14/2008 Diamond Select Toys Star Trek Capt Picard with Command Chair Review
Back to back Star Trek reviews. This review is for the Diamond Select Toys Star Trek Capt Picard with Command Chair. Since Art Asylum had the bridge playsets for their Enterprise toy line, we have been pretty bare for anything similar from the DST toy line. First we got Captains Pike and Kirk in their chairs and now we get a Star Trek The Next Generation season 1 Captain Picard. I also see there is a New Force Comics exclusive version with Riker in it. I hope this a trend of Next Generation captains' chairs because I am a fan of TNG era of Star Trek. The packaging is a pretty standard window box. It is a bit more colorful than I would choose but I think it fits the show well. It does have those darn twisty wires inside and I ended up damaging the box to get mine out.
The likeness on this figure isn't perfect for my tastes but it is close. I seem to remember some of the past AA/DST Picards having a better likeness but maybe I am wrong. This figure is about 7 1/2" tall. Why am I telling you this? In part because there is some inconsistency in size of the figures in all of the AA/DST Trek lines. I think most of the TNG ones are in scale to one another however. The rest of the figure is sculpted well and is painted cleanly with no obvious bleed overs. There are no peg holes in the bottom of the feet which I wish all companies would put on their figures no matter if they come with stands or not. There are a lot of different action figure stands out there that I would like to use when displaying them. I always have trouble with figures like these standing up long term without them.
But what do you need to stand up for when you have this handy chair to sit in? It is a nice solid chair that spins 306 degrees. It has four stickers on the arms to simulate all those fancy controls. One small flaw on mine is there are some very minor scuff points on the chair seats and where the feet hit the floor from the figure scuffing it a bit while still in the package. It is nothing to get excited about now but I am a bit worried of it scuffing more with age.
The best thing is Picard fits in the chair perfectly. The hands fit right over the controls and his left hand looks ready to give the "engage" command.
This will run you around $25. Your local comic shop may have it in stock but if they don't, there are plenty of online stores that do have it in stock. You can even get it directly from Diamond Select Toys here on their site. I am giving this a *** out of five star rating. I would have rather had a First Contact era uniform for Picard but I am sure that one is coming. This is a nice solid figure and chair. Besides maybe a little scuffing on the chair, this feels like it withhold some good play. The head sculpt isn't perfect for my tastes but it is close.
